The Permanent Way Institution was established on the 5th January 1884 in Britain. The objectives of the Institution are to increase the understanding of work and personalities in the field of permanent way, railway engineering and other fields related to railways. Each Branch or Section arrange regular meetings for the presentation of discussion papers with the exchanging of views together with field trips several times each year. In Britain there are about 29 Sections. There are Sections in Central and Southern Africa, Nigeria, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland and previously there have been active Sections in both New Zealand and Western Australia. The New South Wales Section was formed in 1974 in order to provide a similar vehicle for our rail personnel who are interested in the railway track industry, to have an opportunity to exchange views and to help us all to be more familiar with what is going on in our system. Our Section became Incorporated in 1996. The PWI NSW has held a highly successful Annual Convention every year since our inception. It is usually held during October each year. This event is renowned as being the most value-for-money railway conference in Australia. As each year goes by, our proactive Committee strives to lifting the bar to higher level each time, with each year’s Convention getting better than the previous year’s and with the event continually growing in popularity.
