Following the strong growth of PWI in Western Australia since its establishment in 2025, the PWI‑WA Committee is pleased to host this Technical Meeting. This forms part of an expanding and exciting series of events focused on delivering high-quality technical presentations addressing key issues in the WA rail industry, while also providing valuable opportunities for attendees to connect and network.

Technical Meeting is presented by :

Kenny Hamilton is Programme Manager with John Holland’s Management Services team on the Rail Revitalisation Program, working in conjunction with the Public Transport Authority of Western Australia. He will present on the application of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) within the rail environment, exploring how these technologies can improve understanding of existing infrastructure and track bed conditions, enhance the quality of engineering information, and support informed decision-making across planning, design and future delivery.

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) and photogrammetry

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) and photogrammetry to support efficient investigation and assessment of rail corridors and asset condition. GPR provides non-intrusive subsurface information to improve understanding of track bed conditions and identify areas requiring further investigation, while MLS captures high-resolution spatial data on corridor geometry, infrastructure and surrounding features. These datasets are brought together through Veris’ RailSiDe analytics engine.

When used together, these technologies provide complementary information to support design development, constructability assessment, scope definition and risk reduction. The presentation will explore their applications, expected outputs and limitations, and demonstrate how the resulting information can support informed engineering decisions and future works planning
